Walk Details |
BICKERTON /LARKTON HILL Meet at earlier time of 1.00 at Sherrymill Hill or 1.30 at the National Trust car park on Goldford Lane, Bickerton. A 5-mile meander around heathland and woodland of Larkton and Bickerton and the lanes of Brown Knowl. Some paths are undulating. Dogs on short leads are welcome. There are a couple of stiles. |
EDGELEY, DEARNFORD, ALKINGTON AND BELTON 7-8 miles - cars not needed. This walk will be a slightly shorter version of the one previously advertised, taking in Wedge E-F of the Whitchurch Wheel and part of Walk 10. The latter will be in reverse to the description in the walks book. |
"END-OF-WEEK" WALK - HAWKSTONE FOLLIES Almost a whole day out at Hawkstone Follies with a guided tour for the group (minimum 10, maximum 15). We'll stop for lunch at Grotto Hill with it's fabulous views, and there's a cafe at the end of the walk for hot drinks. Meet at Sherrymill Hill car park at earlier time of 09:30 am to car share. Warning! Steep steps. For more information, please see Hawkstone's webpage. Hawkstone opens at 10:00 am and closes at 3:00 pm, so we'll be back at Whitchurch no later than 4:00 pm. Bring suitable footwear, lunch, drinks AND ... Pay CASH on the day to walk leader - exact change please. If there are 10 of us, the cost will be £12 per person (that's £7 per person for a group of 10 plus £5 per person for the tour with one of Hawkstone's expert guides). If we have more than 10 people on the day, the price will be lower than £12. Hawkstone entry prices are £9.50 for individuals, £7.00 for groups of 10+ plus optional guided tour cost. Sorry no dogs. |
ACTON
- RAVENSMOOR We will meet at Sherrymill Hill car park and car share to Acton car park. This 6-mile walk will go across the fields where the Battle of Nantwich took place. We pass the Walled Garden and make our way to the lake, passing the US airman's grave. We head across to the canal and make our way back to Acton. Please note, no dogs allowed. |
Shropshire Way Festival 2024 - Coton Meet 10:00 am at the Bull & Dog, Coton, Whitchurch SY13 2RA. An 8-mile circular route from the Bull & Dog pub in Coton following a section of the Shropshire Way to the Whixall Marina cafe. Food available to order at the pub at the end of the walk. Shropshire Way Festival 2024 - Whixall Meet 10:00 am at Whixall Marina, Alders Lane, Whixall, SY13 2QS (please park in overflow car park if available). A 7 mile walk from Whixall marina following the Shropshire Way towards Bettisfield then on the old Cambrian Railway to access the Fenns and Mosses. The route returns to the marina via another section of the Shropshire Way. Food and drink available to order at the marina cafe at the end of the walk. Walking boots essential. MID-WEEK WALK - SCHWINGMOOR STROLL Car share from Sherrymill Hill carpark and we will make the pleasant drive into Cheshire to Dagfields Antique and craft village (CW5 7LG). Dagfields is the largest antiques centre in the Northwest; it has tea rooms plus a great shop that sells home-made tasty pies. Perhaps you might like to purchase one for your packed lunch. We will start this 5-mile dog friendly walk from the pie shop. The walk will take us through several ancient parishes, cheshire footpaths, a sand quarry and a lovely stroll on the Schwingmoor Bog which lies within a hollow from the last Ice Age. The Bog is home for lots of rare plants including the Sundew, Bog Aspodel and Bog Rosemary as well as Dragonflies. We will have our packed lunch next to the famous leaning tower of St Chads which dates back to the 7th century and was built in 1470. There is also a very good pub which serves refreshments next to the church for anyone that wants a cool drink. After lunch we will make our way back, walking over a brook with a bridge that is stocked with brown trout, and at one time was used as a source of power for corn milling and iron production. Once back at the car park (around 2-30pm) walkers will have the option to have refreshments at the farm tea room and a browse around the shopping village of hidden gems |
LEIGH ARMS and WEAVER WAY Meet at Sherrymill Hill and drive to Leigh Arms Public House, Acton Bridge on A49. This 9.5 mile walk will cover local paths, lanes, the Weaver Way and Trent and Mersey Canal. We'll have refreshments at the Leigh Arms upon on our return. |
MARKET DRAYTON AND TYRLEY LOCKS Start at Sherrymill car park, Whitchurch at 1 p.m. or Tower Lawn car park, Frogmore Road, Market Drayton TF9 3AA at 1:30 p.m. A circular walk covering 5 miles along town pavements, canal towpaths, lanes and tracks. From Market Drayton town centre we go along the Shropshire Union Canal to Tyrley Locks with a short stop off at the Four Alls Inn near Woodseaves, before returning to Market Drayton via Walkmill Bridge |
TYRLEY LOCKS, ALMINGTON AND MARKET DRAYTON A change from our published programme due to poor walking conditions underfoot. Meet at 10 am at Sherrymill to car share and make our way to the Four Alls Inn, Newport Road, Market Drayton. 8-mile of easy walking, generally, with a couple of awkward stiles and some mud in places after heavy rain. Bring a packed lunch and suitable footwear. We will finish the walk at the Four Alls Inn with drinks/ice cream. Sorry, no dogs. |
THE
LEE HILLS AND WESTON HEATH Due to limited parking at Lee Brockhurst please be prepared to car share from Sherrymill Hill.. Parking is just off the A49 on the right immediately over Lee Bridge – Grid ref. SJ 5485 2680. The walk is approximately 5.5 miles. There are only three stiles but a couple of short steep climbs (but not too strenuous). Please note that the route crosses the A49 road. |
CUPID’S
RAMBLE A 8 mile circular walk from the CRT car park at Queen’s Head taking in parts of the Montgomery Canal, Sutton, Haughton, Tedsmore Bank, Grimpo, West Felton, Cupid’s Ramble and Aston Locks including the nature reserve. After-walk refreshments at The Queen’s Head. |

LLANGOLLEN AND LLANTYSILIO Meet at Sherrymill at EARLIER TIME of 9.30am. Car share to Llangollen Pavillion pay & display car park. The walk is 8.6-miles with some undulating paths but nothing very steep. Walking poles recommended. This very pretty walk will include the Panorama road, some of the Llangollen Heritage trail, the Clwydian way, Llantysilio Church, the Horseshoe falls and the Llangollen canal. Dogs on a short lead are welcome but please be aware there are some stiles and sheep. Please bring a packed lunch. |
TUSHINGHAM Meet at Whitchurch Bus Station. We take the 1.20pm bus to Tushingham and walk back to Whitchurch, via old St Chad’s, Willeymoor lock and Wirswall. The walk is 5 miles. |
BROWN MOSS AND BACK Due to a waterlogged Brown Moss, the walk will be slightly amended from our original plan. We will cross a few fields towards Broughall and head towards the Moss. Our walk on the Moss itself will be very limited, but we will be able to stop and admire it from the lanes. We head to "Chef in the Woods" for some welcome refreshments; there will be some snacks available to buy, aswell as hot drinks. The fields aren't too muddy but please bring suitable footwear! We will also have 2 easy stiles to climb (although 1 of those has a gate to pass through). The walk will be circa 6 miles. You are welcome to bring your own refreshments with you, and dogs on leads are welcome. |
Overton and the River Dee Meet 10am at Sherry Mill Hill or 10.30am at Overton-on-Dee village car park for our 7 mile walk. From the car park, where toilets are available, we will walk through the adjacent churchyard whose ancient yews are listed amongst the Seven Wonders of Wales. Leaving the village, we will descend to the Dee flood plain using the Maelor Way to the river. Picking up the Wat's Dyke Way, we will follow the river through fields and woods towards Overton Bridge. We will pass Erbistock Mill and Weir. Then, after crossing the main road, we will head north past Asney Park Farm the home of Woodlands Icecream. We will then rejoin the river to Argoed where there is short but steep ascent with steps to take us off the flood plain. We will then head back to Overton-on-Dee. After walk refreshments at The White Horse in Overton (if it has reopened) or The Hanmer Arms if not. There is only one unavoidable style and even that is dog-friendly. |
Ossmere About 5 miles out of town to Black Park to Ossmere and back via Brick Kiln Farm. An old favourite but a route we haven’t done for a while. |
A Winter Jaunt: Ash, Brown Moss,
Broughall After meeting, we will drive to The White Lion in Ash for a 4-5 mile winter walk taking in Brown Moss and Broughall. |
3 Farms Incorporating Bubney Farm, Hadley Farm and Belton Farm, this walk takes in the rolling scenery around Whitchurch. |
NewYear Bimble - Members Only Step into 2024 with our regular New Year walk on our local footpaths, followed by a convivial drink and meal in one of our excellent hostelries. Distance: 4-5 miles. Dogs on leads welcome. |
Christmas Walk followed by
Christmas Meal at The Archie To ring the changes we will take the 10.05 bus [511] to Prees Heath [The Raven] and walk back via Brown Moss. 4 miles, so there will be a 10.00am start from Whitchurch Bus Station (outside Tesco). Members can also book to attend the Christmas Meal (see email). |
Chirk area This 8-mile walk follows the canal towpath to start, then through the tunnel to Chirk. Traversing Chirk Castle grounds to pick up Offas Dyke path, later joining The Shropshire and Maelor Ways to return back to the start. Due to daylight restrictions at this time of year, this walk will leave Sherrymill Hill car park at the earlier time of 9.00am, so the walk will commence at 10am from Chirk bank. People should bring torches for the tunnel transit, and then if time gets tight, we will have illumination. |
Whixall Area This is a walk of approximately 5 miles exploring the footpaths and wonders of the Whixall area. Dogs on leads welcome. |
Meres & Woods After meeting at Sherrymill Hill car park at 10.00, we will car share to Ellesmere then walk along the canal and around Colemere, where the autumn colours should be at their best. We will walk through Burns Wood to Whitemere and back to the marina via fields and lanes. Easy walking, 7.5 miles, with some stiles. Suitable clothing for muddy paths and a packed lunch needed. Dogs welcome but they will need to be lifted over some stiles. |
The 'Prees Circular' A 5-mile circular walk with excellent views From Sherry Mill Hill car park we will car share to the walk start point at Prees Cricket and Recreation Club. Dogs welcome, but dog owners should note that there are some stiles on this walk and we will have to cross the A49. |
Apedale and
Silverdale 8.5-mile walk visiting three former mining areas. After meeting at Sherry Mill Hill, we will drive to Grubbers Ash car park on Blackbank Road just past Alsagers Bank. From Apedale Country Park we will walk down to Bateswood Nature Reserve and the memorial for the Minnie Pit disaster in 1918. We then climb up to Scot Haye and enter Silverdale Country Park. Then we will return to Apedale and make our way down to the Heritage area, where it is possible to get a cup of tea in the cafe before returning to the car park. This walk is not suitable for dogs. |
Bronington by Bus Please note that this walk meets at the earlier time of 12.30pm at Whitchurch bus station (Tesco’s), to catch the 12.40pm 146 Wrexham bus to Bronington. Moreton Corbet
From Sherrymill
Hill car park we will car share to the small car park at Lee Brockhurst
Memorial.
Using
a mixture of old green lanes, footpaths and quiet roads, this 8-mile
walk includes an extended lunch break amidst the romantic ruins of
Moreton Corbet Castle offering time to explore the ruins and the church.
This walk is deemed
easy to moderate, with no facilities.
Suitable for dogs.
Packed lunch required.

Grindley Brook and Back
Starting
at Sherrymill Hill car park, this 6-mile walk will head out to Grindley
Brook
along the canal. Then to Llethr Mill along part of
the Llwybr Maelor Way, passing Wolvesacre Hall and Bubney.
Dogs are welcome on
this walk, but there are a few stiles. Please bring a drink.

Severn Way & Rea Brook
Valley loop – by train*
Please
note that this walk meets at Whitchurch rail station [free parking] at
10.20am to catch the 10.32am train to Shrewsbury.
This 9 mile walk will go in a counter-clockwise direction leaving Shrewsbury station just after 11am. From there we will go straight down to the river, walking upstream to the English Bridge which we will cross and then pass Shrewsbury Abbey to the old Abbey Station. We will then follow the Rea Brook Valley LNR before joining what was once the route of the Severn Valley railway line. Lunch will be taken at about 12.30pm at the Springfield Mere Countryside Site. No morning break is planned so, if like me, you want a mid-morning drink, please have it on the train. There will then a bit of pavement walking to Emstrey where we join the Severn Way. We then follow the River Severn upstream for several miles through some quite varied country ranging from arable fields to steep-sided woodland. There are good view of Haughmond and Uffington. At Ditherington, we cross the river to the north bank and complete the walk via the Shropshire Way. Near the end, we should have time for a refreshment stop at either the Weir Café or the Dog & Pheasant in Castlefields before catching the 16.24 train back to Whitchurch. There are no stiles
and unlikely to be more than a few cattle so it should be suitable for
anyone wishing to bring a dog[s].

Fields & Fairways and
Farther Afield
This 5-mile
(approx.) walk initially
follows Walk 1 from our book of walks, but from Fairy Glen it goes out
to Grindley Brook, then returns along the canal and through Greenfields
LNR.

This
7-mile walk is a dog friendly walk following the Stockton Walk out to
Danson’s Wood, along the canal and past part of Bubney Farm.
Please bring lunch/refreshments with you.

Chairman’s Midsummer Meander A local walk of about 4 miles of the Chairman’s choosing. This mystery meander will always end at a local hostelry for a convivial get-together. |
Ash, Melverley Meadows,
Ightfield, Ash Parva* This 5-mile circular walk across undulating, easy countryside will start from Ash village hall at 1.45pm. The walk will take in the wildflowers of Melverley Meadows Nature Reserve en route to Ightfield church, before returning to Ash. There will be a short drink break. Dogs are welcome on this walk, but there are stiles |
Llanymynech and Pant
Meet at Sherrymill Hill car park to travel to walk start at a very small car park in Underhill Lane, Pant. The approximately 8.5 mile walk will take us up onto Llanymynech hill and over the golf course to Llynclys Common and join Offas Dyke path, then on to Carreghofa. The return route will include a canal walk and the aqueduct over the river Vyrnwy. There are a lot of climbs, but not too many stiles. Packed lunch required. Not suitable for dogs. |
Hanmer Mere Circuit
This
5-mile circular walk from Hanmer Mere takes in the “hidden lake” and
hopefully some bluebells. With rolling countryside and some green
lanes, this easy walk offers some really lovely views.
Suitable for dogs. Please bring a drink. |
Higher Burwardsley, Peckforton
And Beeston Mosses*
Meet at the earlier time of 1.00pm to travel to Burwardsley Candle Workshop Car park. The walk will be 7 miles on good footpaths and tracks. The terrain is gently undulating pastureland, woodland and the Peckforton and Beeston mosses with lovely views and very few stiles. Suitable for dogs but note stiles. Please bring a drink. |
Haughmond Abbey & Forest
Ramble*
This
8-mile walk consists of fields & woodland paths with only one
medium/steep ascent. Please note the earlier start time to drive to
Haughmond Forest car park (£4 charge). Largely following The Shropshire
Way where we may see bluebells and various wildlife, this walk takes in
the evocative ruins of Haughmond Abbey.
There may even be time for a cuppa at Pine Tops Café. |
Annual General Meeting, Speaker,
and Social at the Archibald Worthington Club Doors open at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. Speaker: Martyn Bracegirdle on “The Cheshire Circuit” which passes through Whitchurch and links the Sandstone Trail to the Weaver Way. Bring and share buffet.(use paper plates). There will also be a lucky dip. |
Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses* Easy level walking across the mosses, with possibly some muddy areas, 5.5 miles. Gaiters might be useful. Meet at Sherrymill Hill carpark for car sharing and drive to Morris' Bridge car park, Whixall from where walk will leave at 1.30pm (Map ref: SJ 49325 35407 What3words: rely.beaten.ushering). The mosses are a very atmospheric place any time of the year. |
Two Mosses Return* A walk of 8 miles (subject to changes due to weather) circling Wem & Cadney Mosses towards Bettisfield. Prees - Walk
No. 2*
Prees
walk No 2 starts at Prees Village Hall (lifts from Sherrymill Hill are
available - please
register). This is an earlier start time to
ensure the walk finishes before dark.
This is a 6.5 miles circular walk crossing fields to Soulton Hall (with views of the Long Barrow) before passing via Brook House towards Prees Green. From Maynard's Farm Shop we cross the A49 to enter Lower Heath and return to Prees via Prees Church. There are a mixture of stiles and gates (many recently installed by the Prees Walking Group), so the walk should be OK for dog walkers. NOTE Dog Walkers that we will criss - cross the B5065 a few times, as well as, crossing the A49. |
Audlem* Meet at Sherry Mill Hill car park and car share to Audlem. From Audlem car park, we will embark on an 8 mile circular walk on field paths, tracks, lanes and towpaths. The circular walk takes in Mill Lane, Bunsley Bank, Sparrowy Spout, Longhill, Highfields, and Coxbank. There are some stiles and sheep in fields. Packed lunch needed and suitable footwear. Note: advise car sharing as works in Audlem car park have significantly reduced parking capacity |
A Dog
Friendly "Winters Tail" Walk This lovely and mainly dry 5.5 mile walk takes us over Shropshire countryside and leafy lanes. The walk starts from Sherry Mill Hill car park and then on to the outskirts of the Nature Reserve and then onto part of the Sandstone Trail towards Broughall with a hardstanding walk from the Moss. From here, the walk will then lead us towards Edgeley Road and the Hatton Way back to the car park via Jubilee Park. There are three easy stiles which are dog friendly (dogs must be put on the lead on public footpaths) There will be a 10 minute refreshment break and so please bring a drink. |
Broughall, Woodhouses, Blakemere
We
will meet at Sherry Mill Hill car park for an easy circular
walk
to blow off the excesses of the festive season, with varied views of
Shropshire landscape near Whitchurch including some meres.
There are a number of stiles, and the walk will be approximately 7 miles |
New Year’s Revolution
A brisk 4 -5 mile
local bimble to blow away the cobwebs of Christmas around
part of the Whitchurch Wheel.
We will meet at Sherry Mill Hill car park and set off at 10am. The aim is to finish about noon and then go to the Cock And Greyhound for a drink. Anyone wishing to have food will need to order it in advance (by the 30th Dec) directly with the pub. When ordering, please explain that you are with Whitchurch Walkers. Lee Brockhurst* A
7 mile walk starting with a climb up to the viewpoint on Lee Hill.
After crossing the A49 with care, we walk via Whixhill into Weston
under Redcastle and eat lunch. Our return route is by the old
coppice and Papermill Bank. Only 1 stile and one field with sheep.

Primrose Hill & Utkinton*
A
mixture of woodland and farmland walking, with good views.
There
are some modest climbs and occasional rocky ground. There may
be
some mud in places, after rain.
The walk is 7 1/2
miles.

Blackoe & Belton Approximately 6 miles walk with a mixture of canal towpath, fields and lanes. Through the fields behind Greenfields Nature Reserve and along the canal to the bridge by Blackoe Cottages. Across fields to Blackoe Bridge and along the lane to The Manor before cutting across to Belton. Good views of the Welsh hills if clear. A mixture of gates and couple of stiles. The stiles are not likely to be suitable for dogs (unless small enough to be lifted over). It's likely to be muddy in places so we may have to take a few detours. . |
Ash and Melverley* An easy 8 mile walk with some lovely views of the Shropshire countryside. There is a mixture of stiles and gates. The walk starts from Brown Moss, proceeding up to Ash war memorial for remembrance Sunday. From there we go across to Broughall and onto Melverley Meadows skirting the nature reserve. After this we head to near Ightfield and round to Ash Parva which leads back to Brown Moss for tea and cakes at the Café in the Woods. |
Hanmer*
On
this walk there are many stunning views, and it is an uphill-downhill
walk (I would call it a moderately strenuous walk). There
are quite a few stiles and some walking on quiet lanes.
Approximately 6 miles. |
Grinshill and Clive
Meet at Sherrymill
Hill car park and car share as parking at Corbet Wood is very limited.
From Corbet Wood we walk to the lookout at Grinshill, to Clive Church and to Yorton. Then, we walk via Sansaw to the village of Grinshill, returning to Corbet Wood using permissive paths. We walk through interesting woodland belonging to the Acton Reynald Estate. Easy walking 7.5 miles. |
NOTES
1. The meeting point for all walks is Sherry Mill Hill car park, unless otherwise stated.
2. Saturday walks will be 5 or 6 miles,
Sunday walks between 8 and 10 miles.
Both may be subject to change depending upon weather, walking
conditions and unforeseen circumstances.
3. Offers to lead walks are welcomed; please ask about volunteering and support offered
4. All members are expected to observe the Country Code.
5. Dogs are permitted on walks but MUST be restrained on a lead at the leader’s request and ALWAYS when in fields containing livestock.
6. In all matters relating to any walk, the leader’s decision is final.
7. Junior members (14+ years) are welcome and under must be accompanied by an adult.
8. Members are reminded that they are on walks entirely at their own risk.
9. On Sunday walks, bring packed lunch and – unless a pub stop is indicated – a drink.
10. Please wear suitable footwear – fields are often very muddy.
11. Please bring your car if available for all “away from home” walks.
12. The cost of transport for “away from home” walks should be shared by members at a rate of 15 per mile per car. Drivers can donate this to club funds if they wish.
13. Members are requested not to walk in front of the leader.
14. People with a known medical condition should be aware that group leaders may have a basic First Aid knowledge but cannot take responsibility for existing medical conditions. If a condition could manifest itself on a walk, the walker should inform the leader beforehand [verbally or in writing].
